Community Collaboration
From time to time, we are asked how churches can get connected with our local schools and serve them in a relevant, practical way. If you are not already involved in some way, here is a great opportunity to get engaged. Below are a number of ways you can make a difference right now. If there is a project or need listed below that you are interested in, please contact the person listed with that need/project.

VALLEY FORGE HIGH SCHOOL
Our math classes are seeking class presentations from any professionals in fields that require higher level mathematics. So many students ask, "When am I ever going to use this!?" And we give the vague answer of STEM fields or engineers, etc. But I think if someone came in to put a face on it and gave some examples of their daily operations they could actually become more interested in the math. Some ideas: architects; computer programmers; insurance underwriters; industrial/civil/chemical engineers; marketing careers, advertisement; small business owners; actuary, climatologist, geologist, cartologists, stockbroker...so many more!

We could use donations for prizes (gift cards, t-shirts, anything that we can give or raffle away) and food (hot dogs, pizza, chips) for our next Renaissance picnic/party on May 22nd (between 400-500 students).

ISI PROGRAM: I keep students working in here so I use a lot of school supplies. I watch the sales and use my own money to buy a lot of the supplies at the beginning of the year. I can use #2 PENCILS (many of them), notebook paper, pens, markers, colored pencils, erasers, folders, poster boards, etc. I find that if I have product available for students to use, they will work. Some just don't have the money to buy items, so I get many doing big projects in ISI. Any office supplies would be appreciated. CONTACT: Debbie Meeks

I am Denise Handel and teach 6th grade at Hillside. We are setting up career exploration talks for our students. We would love to have someone to come speak to our kids. We are having people in the weeks of May 12 to May 30th. We would love to have a detective to come in if possible.

We were wondering if Dairy Queen or any ice cream shop in our area would be willing to donate prepackaged ice cream cups and toppings for an end of the year reward for our students. We have about 230 sixth grade students.

SHILOH MIDDLE SCHOOL
We are seeking incentives for our 7th graders who "Pay it Forward" through a gift card program - any amount of gift cards from $5 to $10 are much appreciated.

Shiloh Middle School could use a sponsor for the 4th quarter attendance incentive reward. In the past, we have provided each student on the team with the highest average quarterly attendance a donut, piece of pizza, or other small refreshment. The number of students rewarded is around 275. If any local business could either donate the refreshments or donate money so I could purchase the refreshments we would really appreciate it. I will be rewarding the winners of the attendance incentive program on June 5, 2014. Thank you for your help in promoting Shiloh's students!

We could really use some sharpened no. 2 pencils for my students to use during testing week. Also, we like to give out mints during the test. We have about 90 students that will need a new pencil and some mints.

We are in desperate need for Spanish to English/English to Spanish dictionaries. They don't all have to match, any donations would be appreciated. Also, pencils are always needed.

JOHN MUIR ELEMENTARY
(1) Gift certificates for shopping, restaurants, ice cream, etc. as rewards for reaching goals would be greatly appreciated; (2) Craft kits and origami books/supplies as rewards for reaching goals are welcome; (3) A bakery or business willing to contribute cookies for cookie reward parties. I like to give what is called the "Smart Cookie" award to students who consistently perform well on class assessments; (4) I hope to teach an enrichment summer course on becoming a young author. I would love to have a guest speaker who published a book and can share the steps needed to become an author; (5) Fourth graders are mastering math facts in order to earn an ice cream sundae party, so buckets of ice cream and a variety of toppings will be needed.

I am a first grade teacher and would love to buy more chapter books for my classroom. My kids strive to become fluent readers for the opportunity to read chapter books (it's a big deal in my room). I have 1 rack of chapter books, but can't continue to buy all the books they want on my own...it's getting expensive:) In addition, I have many literature circles running in my classroom during PIE time and am in need of multiple copies of book titles. Our library has very few options for books when looking for multiple copies of the same book. My little readers would absolutely love more books to read!! They beg me for reading time daily!

The fourth graders at John Muir have been working hard towards an ice cream party in math since November. Students have been building a sundae based upon how well they know their multiplication facts. Our party is scheduled for May 22 and we are in need of ice cream, chocolate syrup, bananas, sprinkles, m&m's, whipped cream and cherries. Help with any of those ingredients would be greatly appreciated.

PARMA PARK ELEMENTARY
My grade mates and I teach first grade. We are in need of some supplies. We are working on enriching our curriculum in many ways. We want to focus on differentiating our teaching to reach all students. We wanted to engage all students and we thought what better way to do it than with a game. They won't even realize they are learning. We were hoping to possibly acquire some curriculum based games focusing specifically on Math. CONTACT: Katie Evans
My role at the school is Home Liaison. I provide several services for the school, but one of them is to provide services to students that can include small groups and individual incentives. I have Lego blocks that I have been using in groups and for students to play with as a reward. The popularity of the blocks is such that I could use more. I have found them to be a wonderful way to help students with social anxiety interact with others. With the addition of some more blocks and larger building plates, Legos can be used to promote cooperation and problem solving skills.

I have the inclusion class and many (most) of my students are full of excess energy. My son's first grade teacher had fitness balls for the students to set on instead of chairs. I would love to get a class set of ball/seats in my room to allow the students to wiggle while they work.

RIDGE-BROOK ELEMENTARY
I would like to implement a great idea on the playground called a BUDDY BENCH. This would be a Bench that students can go sit on when they are looking for someone to play with. Then when other students on the playground saw that child sitting there, they would then walk over to the BUDDY BENCH and ask them to play. Basically, looking for a business that would either be able to make durable outdoor banners for us to create our "BUDDY BENCHES" or supply the funds to purchase one.

I am looking for some different blending activities and came across a great activity that uses these "BLENDING BOARDS". I am wondering if there is either a business that would be able to make them or supply the funds to make them. I was hoping for 3-4 blending boards for my classroom. Link describing BLENDING BOARDS is:http://blog.maketaketeach.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Blending-Board-Directions.gif

PROJECT SEARCH
Refreshments for some of our upcoming activities this year and next year:
June 4 - Project SEARCH Graduation - 4-5:30 - We would like to get a cake, beverages, and plates for the celebration. We expect 45-55 people. If possible, a small gift for each student to go along with their diploma. Last year I gave each student a mug with their name on it, and "Parma Hospital Intern 2012-13".
August 20 - Orientation for the 2014-15 PS class - It would be nice if we could get some beverages and refreshments (cookies/chips) for 25-30 people.
November 25 & March 6 - Completion of the 1st and 2nd Internship Rotation - We usually have a class party that is open to department managers. We would need a cake (half sheet) for about 20 people each time.
*Also, if anyone would like to purchase the Project SEARCH polo shirts for the incoming students, that would be great! We purchase 3 shirts for each student. Next year we will welcome 9 students. Polo shirts were $13 each last year. The total would be $351 if the price remains the same.
*Anyone who is willing to talk with the class about careers and how to be successful in the workplace would be great too!
